Words through time

If you read my story, you’ll know that I started my blog after a life changing accident that confined me to bed for a year.  With free time and my laptop I started looking up the answers to some of the off the wall questions that crossed my mind.

I’ve always liked to know where things, words, phrases and stuff like come from, so I went looking and I found some unexpected stuff that I’m now sharing with you.

The following content is not mine, it is a compilation of different websites and authors all of which are listed in this article. For space purposes I have only listed the words I found most interesting and/or unexpected.

Words Coined in the  19th Century (http://www.dailywritingtips.com)

Bicentennial: Humorist Mark Twain was the first writer to attach the prefix bi-, meaning “two,” to centennial, a recently coined word referring to a 100-year anniversary.

The Love Affair I’ve Yet To Have

In 2008 as I was discovering Facebook, I was reconnecting with people from my past and getting to know new “friends” every day.

One of those friends is from Norway. We communicated a lot via chat and thus begun my love affair with his country.

We no longer keep in touch but I will always thank him for unknowingly me to his country.

I am totally smitten with Norway, with the colorful houses of Bergen, the intriguing Lofoten Islands, the almost monochromatic beauty of Svalbard, to name a few.

Life has taken me through some weird paths  these last couple of years.  Paths in which I got lost sometimes, looking for my north. I recently learned that the meaning of Norway is “way leading to the north” I can’t think of a better name.

I can already see myself scared out of my wits reaching to the edge of Trollveggen the tallest vertical rock face in Europe. I can feel the freedom and exhilaration of the breath taking beauty I will be looking at.

I can hear the crackling of the logs of my rented loft in Bergen. TheFløibanen Funicular to Floyen Mountain and the colorful city below me.  The almost unreal sunsets  on Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf . A day tour toLysøen to visit Ole Bull’s 19th century villa. Hike until my heart’s content in Stoltzekleiven.

I wonder what little café will become my hangout place, my local bakery  and my local supermarket. I want to get lost in their guttural sounding language of which I’m sure I won’t understand let alone pronounce a word but it will make me smile nonetheless.

Admittedly I was initially drawn to it’s natural beauty but as I started my research for my trip, I’ve learned quite a bit about this country which is  in the lead of just about all of the indexes on education, health care, quality of life, income per capita, life expectancy, again to name a few.

Unlike most affairs my affair with Norway will entail lots and lots of warm, fluffy, cozy, oversized winter clothes. After years of the relentless heat of Florida, I can’t wait to cuddle up with a great book a glass of Chardonnay in front of a fireplace under a warm, warm blanket.

Keanu vs. Keanu

I recently read a review for John Wick 2, which was deemed as a “Visual Celebration of Violence”.

I am a long time fan of Keanu Reeves but I in the midst of the chaos we are living as a society I found the box office success bitter sweet and a reflection of the misguided modern values.

The review also mentioned that John Wick had restored the devaluated image of the actor to the Matrix’s glory days. Even I can agree that The Matrix broke the mold of action movies when it came out in addition to a whole new possible idea of why we are here.

The fact that the reviewer would doubt Keanu’s success as an actor with 51 movies under his belt makes me wonder who’s not seeing the whole picture him or the public.

Keanu in my eyes have proved to be an eclectic and great actor since his early movies like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and  rising to the occasion along side Glenn Close in Dangerous Liasions,  Al Pacino in The Devil’s Advocate and a blonde Patrick Swayze in Point Break.

I am not naïve enough not to know that action movies have changed so much that Speed would probably be rated G by now. Still, I can’t be totally happy with his regained status as an Action Star.

I would take the Keanu of The Lake House, Something’s Gotta Give and The Replacements any day of the week. The first kiss in the bar scene is  quite possibly my all my time favorite movie kiss. Quick update, I just watched it again looking for the link for the posting. It’s official it is my favorite movie kiss of all time.

Mornings with a kick

Popular wisdom refers to breakfast as the most important meal of the day. I for one, agree, but not all breakfasts are created equal.

I try to keep mine as healthy as I can but I am a very moody eater so I can go anywhere from water with lime and fruit to waffles with lots of butter and honey.  To find a happy medium I scoured the web for healthy and tasty breakfast that at least most of my moods could live with. I found this post in www.greatist.com written by Kate Morin on March 30th of 2016, she has literally solved the moody breakfast dilemma for me.

I hope it does the same for you!
